The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary Education, Pune came into existence on 1st January, 1966, as per the Maharashtra Act No.XLI of 1965 (called as Maharashtra Secondary Boards Act 1965) to regulate certain matters pertaining to secondary education in the State of Maharashtra. The Act was amended in 1977 and the nomenclature of the Board has been changed to "The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education."As a State level organisation.
Maharashtra, the third largest state of India in terms of area and population, is also known for its excellent educational facilities in pre-primary, secondary as well as higher level education.
Schooling in Maharashtra starts at the age of five. All schools in the state are managed either by Municipal Corporation or privately by trusts and individuals. All the private schools or municipal schools are affiliated either with Maharashtra State Secondary School Certificate (SSC) board or the council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (ICSE) and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) boards.

The State Board has adopted the scheme of subjects for STds. IX and X as recommended in the NPE 1986. The document entitled 'National Curriculum for Elementary and Secondary Education' - A framework' published by the N.C.E.R.T. has been followed by the Board.
The syllabi of Stds. IX to XII have been revised and restructured taking into consideration the draft syllabi and guidelines supplied by the N.C.E.R.T. The restructure syllabi contain approximately 70% of the core supplied by the N.C.E.R.T and 30% have been framed on the basis of regional requirement and situation. These syllabi had been approved by the Government These syllabi have been introduced in Stds. IX and XI dfrom the academic year 1994-95 and in Std. X and XII from the academic year 1995-96 as per the order of the State Government.
